Revolutionizing Fashion: The RNMS Totebag by Daehyeon Kim

A Multifunctional Design Marvel, Celebrating Color and Uniqueness

Daehyeon Kim's design approach for the RNMS Totebag was unconventional. Instead of drawing inspiration from existing objects or environments, Kim started from zero, focusing on unconsciousness and improvisation. This approach allowed the designer to create a product that truly embodies the identity of RNMS, while also offering something different and unique.

The RNMS Totebag is characterized by its color contrast, a key consideration in its design. Each part of the bag is expressed in different colors, with the exterior kept as simple as possible to draw attention to the color. The bag also features a pocket for storing essentials like cell phones and wallets, and it has a waterproof function. The strap comes in six colors, allowing users to choose according to their preference. The handle can be shown or hidden, depending on the user's preference, adding another layer of customization to the design.

The totebag is made of PVC tarpaulin, a fabric known for its gloss and durability. Commonly used as a truck awning or outdoor signboard, this material not only ensures the bag's sturdiness but also enhances its color richness. The bag's dimensions are width 300mm x depth 55mm x height 300mm, making it a practical and stylish accessory.

The RNMS Totebag can be carried around or worn like a cross bag, thanks to a bag strap hanger inside the bag. The handle can be exposed or hidden, offering two different styles of crossback. The bag's design was completed around May 2020 and launched in June 2020. It has since been recognized with the K-design award, one of the three major design awards in Asia, and the Asia Design Prize.

The most challenging part of designing the RNMS Totebag was achieving harmony of colors. The bag, excluding the strap, features four colors that must harmonize with each other (body, handle, logo, alphabet). Finding colors that harmonize with each other among countless options was not easy, but the result is a product that truly stands out for its color contrast.

The RNMS Totebag is a testament to the power of color contrast and the beauty of simplicity.
