House on the Cliff: A Testament to Architectural Innovation

Shamsudin Kerimov's Award-Winning Design Merges Nature and Architecture

Shamsudin Kerimov's "House on the Cliff" is an architectural marvel that seamlessly integrates the natural surroundings with the built environment. This innovative residential building, located in Algarve, Portugal, has been recognized with a Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2021.

Derived from the natural context, the house is designed to harmonize with the rocky landscape. All windows are oriented towards the ocean, offering breathtaking views. The color scheme is based on neutral natural tones, and the facade features a discreetly decorative perforation that allows sunlight into the interior, creating a play of light and shade. The non-steep staircase, with its irregular rhythm of steps, emphasizes the natural slope leading to the shore.

The architectural solution of the house involves two parallelepipeds embedded in each other, intersected by the vertical of the chimney. The rhythm of the structure is set not only by the complex form but also by the multidirectional textures of the facade cladding materials. The design features only natural materials and their derivatives, further enhancing its connection with the surrounding environment.

The main volume of the house is made of architectural concrete, while the second volume is fronted with metal that will oxidize and acquire a patina over time due to precipitation. The project also uses a thermal tree which, under the influence of the sun, will be burnt out and acquire new shades. This 250 sq.m. house is a testament to Shamsudin Kerimov's innovative use of materials and technology.

The functional program of the house is distributed between a larger volume that accommodates the living room and dining room, and a smaller volume that houses the bedroom and bathroom. The house also features a chill-out zone, a meditative space for the clients, complete with sun loungers, a fireplace, and a small overflow swimming pool. This open-air lounge allows the residents to watch the ocean’s waves, read a book by the fireplace, or sip a glass of wine.

The project, which started in 2020, is still in progress. Despite the challenges of the ongoing pandemic, Kerimov and his team, including Ekaterina Kudinova, have managed to create a design that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and sustainable. Shamsudin Kerimov's "House on the Cliff" is a prime example of how architecture can blend with nature, creating a living space that is both beautiful and sustainable. Its recognition with a Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2021 is a testament to Kerimov's innovative approach and architectural prowess. This project is a beacon of inspiration for architects and designers worldwide, proving that it is possible to create stunning designs that respect and enhance their natural surroundings.
