3D Plate: Food Separation by Surfaces

An Innovative Solution for Designing Dishes

Inspired by The Math Of Design Thinking Inside The Box

The 3D Plate, designed by Ilana Seleznev, is a revolutionary concept that aims to help chefs and restaurants design their dishes in a faster, repeatable, and systematic way. This unique plate features 3D layers, allowing for food separation by surfaces, creating a visually appealing and easily understandable dining experience.

Ilana Seleznev developed The Math Of Design Thinking Inside The Box, a new thinking system methodology, which guides designers on how to think and where to look in order to create innovative products in a systematic way. With this project, the goal was to apply this methodology to the culinary world, assisting chefs and restaurants in their creative process.

The 3D Plate stands out from other designs due to its ability to provide a structured framework for dish creation. The layers on the plate act as landmarks, helping chefs and their assistants achieve hierarchy, desired aesthetics, and understandable dishes. This innovative approach allows for faster and more efficient design iterations, ensuring consistent results.

The plates are meticulously handcrafted from clay, following the principles of The Math Of Design Thinking Inside The Box. They come in different sizes and can be customized to meet the specific needs of each client or request. The default colors are black and white, adding a touch of elegance to any dining experience. Sizes range from 12 to 24 cm, offering versatility for various culinary creations.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was working with clay as the main material. In Israel, clay is rare and expensive, making it a valuable and sought-after resource. Additionally, creating products for the kitchen requires meeting high standards and obtaining approvals from different agencies. Despite these challenges, the 3D Plate was successfully brought to life.

The 3D Plate is not only a functional piece of tableware but also a tool that enhances the dining experience. By providing a systematic approach to dish design, it empowers chefs to express their creativity while ensuring consistency and clarity for their customers. This innovative design has the potential to revolutionize the way dishes are conceptualized and presented in the culinary world.

As a testament to its excellence, the 3D Plate was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category in 2021. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The 3D Plate's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contributes to a better world of culinary design.
