Love Eternity: A Jewel of Innovation and Sustainability

Designers Kaining Wang and Shao-Hsuan Hou's Award-Winning Earrings

The inspiration for Love Eternity came from a simple scribble among other design concept drawings. The designers wanted to create a piece of jewelry that illustrates 'love' and arrived at spirals as a perfect depiction of the perpetual nature of love. The spiral design, with two strands emanating from a shared center - a rich red ruby - symbolizes the strength of unity and the power of love.

What sets Love Eternity apart is its unique properties. Each earring consists of two parts: a bezel holding a ruby and a spiral drop element. The bezel has a channel from which the spiral hangs and moves in a pendulum motion. The alternating rows of diamonds and gold illustrate two strands giving and receiving as equals as they wind into one and flow in a spiral course. This circular dynamic symbolizes the perpetual nature and the power of love - the central idea of the design.

Love Eternity is made from 14K solid yellow gold, a matching pair of 3.0mm round lab-grown rubies, and about 558 round diamonds. The production technology included computer modeling, 3D printing, lost-wax casting, stone setting, etc. It was manufactured entirely in the USA, ensuring the highest quality and adherence to ethical standards.

The earrings were designed with sustainability in mind. The designers undertook extensive research to determine responsibly sourced materials for manufacturing the earrings. They chose to use 14K recycled gold from a US manufacturer, lab-created rubies sourced from Stuller, Inc., and natural diamonds sourced from Hoover & Strong, Inc. These diamonds are guaranteed to have been purchased from legitimate sources not involved in funding conflict and in compliance with United Nations resolutions.

The design process, which started in August 2020, was not without challenges. The designers had to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing version of the spiral element, decide on the best hanging mechanism that would allow pendulum motion of the earrings when worn, and determine the arrangement of gemstones on the spiral structures. Despite these challenges, the designers were able to create a piece that is not only aesthetically pleasing and innovative but also sustainably made.

Love Eternity is a testament to the power of love and the beauty of sustainable design. It's no surprise that this design was awarded Silver in A' Jewelry, Eyewear and Watch Design Award in 2022. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
