The project was born out of the shock election result of Brexit and Trump. Barth's certainty that such outcomes were impossible, coupled with their reality, had a ripple effect on his perception, inspiring him to create a series of physical moments that become warped by our judgment. He wanted these moments to feel surreal but look palpable, so he researched ways of shooting this series without using any CGI.
Barth's unique approach to photography sets this design apart. All the effects were created in-camera using a mix of gravity-defying rigs, 3D prints, and optical illusions that were tested and created in his workshop for a month. The materials used include wood, printed lycra, 3D printed plaster, high-density foam, and plexiglass. With only slight retouching, the images are a testament to Barth's technical prowess and innovative approach.
The series was not without its challenges. One of the most significant was finding ways to create multiple physical systems that could create a warped reality to be photographed. The upside-down set with the computer screen spraying emojis took two weeks of rebuilding until it was safe enough for the model to lay down in it.
The project, which started in October 2017 and finished in December 2017, was a collaborative effort. Barth was assisted by Morgan Hill Murphy, with models Mathilde Steullet and Jahvel Hall featuring in the series. The set was built by Will Vincent, Brin Frost, and Mathilde Steuillet.
"Epic Fail" has been recognized for its creativity and innovation, winning the Silver A' Photography and Photo Manipulation Design Award in 2021. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The series is a testament to Barth's unique vision and technical skill, showcasing a remarkable level of excellence and introducing positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
