The Corridor: A Modern Japanese Style Interior Design

Connecting Spaces and Maximizing Public Areas

The Corridor, designed by Yi-Lun Hsu, is a unique interior design project that focuses on connecting spaces and maximizing public areas. Inspired by the desire for a wide public space and vision, the designer transformed the master bedroom into a guest bedroom facing the park, creating an open study room in its place. By connecting the living room, dining room, and study room, the design maximizes the public space and avoids the oppression of the original layout.

Located in Hsinchu City, Taiwan, The Corridor stands out for its strategic layout. The living room and master bedroom face the boulevard, while the other two bedrooms offer stunning views of Jinshanmian Park. This thoughtful arrangement allows residents to enjoy the best of both worlds, with a balance between urban and natural landscapes.

The realization of The Corridor involved careful attention to detail and the use of innovative technologies. The entrance features pink hexagonal tiles, creating a stylish dust area. A mirror cleverly hides the distribution box on the wall, while a hook provides a convenient spot for hanging clothes and accessories. The cabinet next to the TV wall introduces the traffic flow of the entrance into the public space, using a grille and an oblique angle to create a visually appealing transition.

With a total area of 100 square meters, The Corridor offers a seamless blend of functionality and aesthetics. The main TV wall in the living room features white marble, adding a touch of elegance to the space. A raised floor extends from the living room window to the study room, forming a corridor of light and shadow. This corridor serves multiple purposes, including brewing tea, resting, stretching, reading, and exercising, providing a versatile and dynamic space for residents.

One of the design's highlights is the study area, defined by a low wall with artistic coating behind the sofa and a beam covered by a mirror. The back wall of the study room combines open bookshelves, grille sliding doors, and blackboard sliding doors. Behind the grille sliding door, a small guest room is hidden, while a guest bathroom space is concealed behind the magnetic blackboard sliding door. The master bedroom, adorned in light purple, reflects the hostess's favorite color, while the grille of the dressing table echoes the design elements found in the living room and study room.

Overcoming the challenges posed by the location of the project, The Corridor incorporates innovative solutions to ensure a comfortable living environment. Situated beside a main traffic road in the Science Park, the design team placed all equipment on the ceiling, including a heat exchanger, air purifier, dehumidifier, and hidden air-conditioning, to avoid polluted air. Control panels are conveniently located in the corridor for easy operation.

The Corridor, with its modern Japanese style and attention to detail, showcases the expertise and creativity of the design team. The use of light wood color throughout the interior creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, while the consistent presence of grille elements adds a touch of modernity. The result is a harmonious and functional living space that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings.

The Corridor was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2022 in the category of Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design. This prestigious award recognizes the design's practicality, innovation, and adherence to professional and industrial requirements. The Corridor is a testament to the team's commitment to creating well-designed spaces that contribute to a better world.
