Ariake Garden: A Fusion of Architecture and Nature

Creating a Relaxing Oasis in the Heart of Tokyo

The Ariake Garden, designed by Shohei Sekiguchi, is a groundbreaking shopping complex that seamlessly blends architecture and nature to provide a unique and relaxing experience for visitors. With its innovative design and abundance of greenery, this facility stands out as a symbol of sustainable urban development.

The inspiration behind the Ariake Garden stems from the rapid population growth in the Ariake area of Koto Ward, Tokyo. With an expected increase of 30,000 residents over the next 15 years, there was a need for a space that could support the lives of local residents and provide a green oasis in the midst of the surrounding skyscrapers. Unlike the vertical buildings that dominate the area, the Ariake Garden features a large lawn square and multiple terraces of various sizes, creating a variety of relaxing spaces for visitors.

What sets the Ariake Garden apart is its integration of greenery into the architecture. The "green curtain," made up of stacked multi-tree planters, serves as a symbol of the building and provides a stunning visual display of greenery both inside and outside the facility. The "green ring," located at the main entrance, consists of laminated planters and acts as a curtain of light, further enhancing the connection between nature and architecture.

With a total floor area exceeding 80,000 square meters, the Ariake Garden offers visitors a place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse themselves in nature. The facility boasts a ground plaza that showcases the changing seasons and a multi-story terrace adorned with lush greenery. By refraining from excessive signage and emphasizing the architecture itself as a sign, the design team has created a visually impressive structure that harmonizes with its surroundings.

The realization of the Ariake Garden presented several challenges for the design team. They had to carefully consider the architectural design to ensure it did not hinder the growth of the planted greenery. Additionally, they had to address issues such as wastewater treatment, soil thickness requirements for different tree species, and the selection of plants suitable for the environment. Through meticulous planning and mockup experiments, the team successfully created a facility that seamlessly combines architecture and planting.

Located in the Ariake district of Tokyo, the Ariake Garden is part of the national strategic special zone designated for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Its construction took place from 2017 to January 2020, and the facility now stands as a testament to the power of design in creating sustainable and harmonious urban spaces.

The Ariake Garden has received widespread recognition for its innovative design. In 2022, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. The Ariake Garden's fusion of architecture and nature exemplifies these qualities, making it a truly remarkable addition to Tokyo's urban landscape.
