Momochan: A Tranquil Japanese Restaurant

Creating a Tranquil Getaway with Great Food

The design of Momochan aims to evoke the feel of a tranquil getaway from the hustle and bustle outside, a place where customers are looked after with great care and, of course, with great food. This Japanese restaurant also provides a space for a pet-friendly corner.

A bright and minimal space, Momochan features big and wide glass panels at the front and back of the restaurant, allowing for great natural lighting during the daytime. The open counter at the shopfront attracts walk-by customers with its ice-cream bar and busy kitchen. Inside, the fabulous use of wood structures adds warmth and nativity to the setting. Handmade lamps, green marble, and wood stripes add textural charm to the interior, blending tradition with modernity in a seamless fashion.

The setting of Momochan features traditional materials such as concrete and wood in a minimalist setting. The entrance wall showcases Japanese traditional wood stripes design and green marble with earthy and neutral tones, creating an atmosphere that is distinctly modern and welcoming. A house-shaped wood striped ceiling connects the open dining and pet-friendly spaces, ending with bench seating that keeps the strip design on the wall.

The open kitchen and bar at Momochan aim to deliver a showcase of sanitary processes and the steps taken to turn fresh, high-quality ingredients into each mouthwatering meal. The customers, who are also the chefs, take pride in the delicious dishes they create. This provides drama and excitement, engaging customers who appreciate the artistry of cooking.

The project to create Momochan started in November 2018 in Jaya One Mall, Kuala Lumpur, and was completed in February 2019. The design team conducted extensive research, especially on the open ice-cream bar at the shopfront, which allows the restaurant staff to engage with walk-by customers. The use of glass panels on both sides of the restaurant allows natural light to fill the interior space, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

One of the challenges faced in the design of Momochan was creating a pet-friendly zone. Glass panels were used as dividers between the normal dining and pet-friendly dining areas to solve hygiene and noise problems for other customers.

Momochan's design has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Momochan is respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings to its customers and contributing to a better world.
