La Pina Distillery: A Fusion of Art, Design, and Innovation

Shinjiro Heshiki's Award-Winning Design Transforms an Amusement Shop into a Sophisticated Distillery

La Pina Distillery, a design project by Shinjiro Heshiki, redefines the concept of an amusement shop by infusing it with a unique blend of art, design, and innovation. This article explores the inspiration, unique properties, realization technology, and the challenges faced during the design process.

Shinjiro Heshiki's inspiration for the La Pina Distillery stemmed from the idea of an explorer's quest for the water of life, symbolized by the Brandy Pineapple Fountain. The design team aimed to create a space that was not only playful and casual but also authentic in feel and shape. They achieved this by arranging distillers and barrels dynamically, adding an entertaining and unusual element to the space.

The unique properties of the design lie in its transformation of the space to cater to a changing demographic. With an increase in adult visitors, the design incorporated elements of a theme park that adults could enjoy. The centerpiece of the facility, a pineapple objet d'art, was designed in the style of a distiller with a fountain motif, creating the illusion of pineapple brandy gushing from underground.

The realization of the design involved intricate piping-style display and lighting around the objects, giving the impression of steampunk. The wall fixtures were finished with iron sheeting to tie in the wood grain and create a mature space. The technical specifications of the Brandy Pineapple Fountain Object were meticulously planned, with a width, depth, and height of 4400mm each.

The design process was not without its challenges. The project began in 2019, during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which necessitated several compromises, including changes in scale and design. Legal requirements also extended the construction period, as the distillery and retail area had to be completed in separate phases.

Despite these challenges, the La Pina Distillery project was a success. It was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2023, a testament to its remarkable design and innovation. The distillery is now a place where adults can relax and enjoy brandy in an elegant atmosphere while watching the brandy production process.

In conclusion, Shinjiro Heshiki's La Pina Distillery is a testament to the power of design and innovation in transforming spaces. It is a unique blend of art, design, and technology, offering a sophisticated and engaging experience for its visitors. The project serves as an inspiration for future designs, proving that with creativity and innovation, any space can be transformed into a unique and engaging experience.
