Miguel Arruda's TAP Lounge, a rectangular space with a strong longitudinal expression, is a testament to the power of innovative design. One of its largest facades, fully lined with glass, offers a view over the runway. The use of concave shapes on the other walls, combined with absorbent coatings of fabric and cork on walls and floors, provides an effective element of acoustic optimization. The lighting of the space is completed by ceiling-embedded spotlights and circular cork lamps that zone the functionalities of the space.
The lounge's unique properties stem from the clever use of 12 pillars in the interior of the original space. These pillars, transformed into sources of illumination with elliptically descending circular forms, inspired the exploration of the curved line in both the two-dimensional architectural plan and the three-dimensional individual and collective sofas.
The realization of the design involved intentional research to solve common problems associated with such spaces. The use of natural cork and cotton fabrics was scientifically studied to create an acoustically controlled environment. This research made it possible to compensate for the use of reflective surfaces, such as glass, which expanded the room's dimension and increased light perception.
The lounge is divided into different functional areas, including resting areas, working areas, informal stay areas, and a food court, all complemented with toilets, catering, and backoffice areas. The reception area is centrally located, allowing easy apprehension of the entire space.
The design and construction of the project lasted 12 months. The project overcame several challenges, including the large number of concrete columns and the need to provide a unique experience for long-term customers who often use the TAP VIP Lounge and need to feel at home. The design's success is evident in its Silver A' Design Award, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.
In conclusion, Miguel Arruda's TAP Lounge is a revolutionary space that combines innovative design with advanced technology to redefine the airport experience. Its unique features, including its use of natural materials and its functional zoning, make it a standout in the field of interior space design.
