Hanoi Mirror House: A Mesmerizing Seascape Masterpiece

Nguyen Thu Thuy Transforms a Public Artwork into an Undersea Journey

Nguyen Thu Thuy, a renowned visual artist, has breathed new life into the Mirror House in Hanoi’s Reunion Park, transforming it into a captivating seascape using ceramic mosaic tiles. This article explores the inspiration, unique properties, and the intricate process behind this award-winning design.

The Mirror House, once in a state of disrepair, has been reborn as an artistic masterpiece. The inspiration for the design came from Vietnam's Ha Long Bay and Truong Sa waves. The exterior of the house is now adorned with wondrous sea murals, while the interior takes visitors on a magical undersea journey, showcasing sea life through 3D mosaic murals. More than 50 mirrors add to the enchantment, making it a delight for both children and adults.

The unique properties of the Mirror House set it apart from other public artworks. The snail-shaped design of the house provides a unified setting for exploring the wonders and beauty of the sea. The exterior walls depict powerful waves, giving the entire installation a feeling of unity and wholeness. The ceramic mural paintings coupled with 3D works of art heighten the impact of this unique house, representing a remarkable piece of public art.

The creation of the Mirror House was a meticulous process. Thu Thuy used different techniques of ceramic making in the house decoration, including ceramic mosaic making, ceramic reliefs to create sea animals and plants, and ceramic stones and pebbles for the floor. The entire surface of the building is covered with Ha Long Bay and Truong Sa waves, created entirely from ceramic mosaic tiles and reliefs.

The technical specifications of the design are impressive. To create the two million ceramic mosaic tiles to cover the total of 812 square meters took over a year of preparation. The artists were able to engrave the huge murals in about five months. The house has a total length of 60 meters, and the walls have an average height of 6.5 meters. The floor inside the building was covered with colored ceramic pebbles and reliefs, while the walls and ceiling were decorated with ceramic mosaic murals and 3D paintings.

The Mirror House is not just a public artwork, but also an interactive experience. Entering the house and gazing at the ceiling allows visitors to be swept into the depths of the ocean, exploring the wonders and beauty of the sea. The brilliant colors of ceramic mosaic murals and 3D paintings provide an opportunity for viewers to imagine the beauty of the sea of Vietnam. The light reflecting on the soft colors creates an illusion of a shimmering aquarium.

The Mirror House is a testament to Thu Thuy's passion for the ocean and her commitment to promoting the beauty of Vietnam's sea and sea life. This unique public artwork has won the Silver A' Social Design Award in 2018, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation. The Mirror House continues to attract a huge number of visitors, making it a significant addition to Hanoi's public art scene.
