While researching airports and flights, designer Dami Kim discovered that baggage traffic was a significant cause of flight delays. The flawed baggage organizing system and insufficient space in the overhead bin led Kim to question whether the space was being utilized efficiently. Despite restrictions on carry-on sizes, there was always room for shopping bags and jackets. This insight inspired Kim to create Arc, a concept that maximizes overhead bin space and potentially increases luggage capacity.
Arc's unique feature lies in its curved corner, which replicates the inner curve of the overhead bin. This curved design takes advantage of the cylindrical fuselage of an airplane, eliminating dead space and optimizing storage. By utilizing this unoccupied space, Arc offers a practical solution to the growing issue of limited overhead bin space.
The design of Arc is both functional and durable. The hard shell is vacuum-formed with polycarbonate, ensuring strength and protection for the contents. Abrasion and water-resistant nylon are used for the pockets and pull handles, guaranteeing longevity and convenience. The telescopic handle and zipper pullers are made of metal, adding a touch of sophistication to the overall design. The plastic logo on the pocket is ultrasonically welded onto the fabric, ensuring a seamless finish.
Arc adheres to the standard size for carry-on luggage in the U.S., measuring 558.8 mm x 355.6 mm x 228.6 mm. This ensures compatibility with most airlines' regulations, making it a versatile choice for travelers.
Arc's functionality extends beyond its innovative design. The flipped orientation of the luggage eases maneuverability in crowded airports and narrow pathways within the airplane. It features 360 spinner wheels and a rotatable telescopic handle, providing a smooth ride and effortless navigation. Three pull handles on the top, front, and bottom of the luggage allow for easy lifting in and out of the overhead bin. These handles are tucked in and flushed with the casing to prevent any obstructions.
Additional features of Arc include a quickly accessible laptop pocket on the side, water-resistant fabric and zipper, a combination lock for added security, a tag for easy identification, backside bars to support sliding in and out of the overhead bin, and an embroidered name tag on the bottom handle to identify the bag owner.
The Arc carry-on luggage concept was designed by Dami Kim in May-July 2021 in Irvine, California. Kim's research involved studying airport environments, observing how people use luggage, and analyzing competitor products to identify areas for improvement.
While designing a one-size-fits-all carry-on luggage may be challenging due to variations in overhead bin sizes and carry-on regulations among airlines, collaboration with airlines and airplane manufacturing companies can lead to better execution of the Arc concept.
Arc's innovative design and practicality have earned it recognition in the design industry. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Fashion and Travel Accessories Design category in 2022. This prestigious award acknowledges well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Arc's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world for travelers.
