The inspiration behind AL FARAGH came from the designers' desire to create a handbag that not only looked stylish but also served a specific purpose. Drawing from their background in architecture, Chantal & Daisy El Jurdi aimed to create a handbag that was not only visually appealing but also highly functional.
What sets AL FARAGH apart is its void, a distinctive feature that allows women to hang their bags onto tables, eliminating the need to place them on the floor or on chairs. This innovative design feature not only solves a daily dilemma but also adds a unique touch to the handbag's overall aesthetic. Additionally, the void divides the bag into two compartments, providing organization and convenience.
AL FARAGH is handmade using genuine calf leather. The gold leather features a lizard print, while the green leather has a satiné finish. The accessories used are gold plated, adding a touch of luxury to the design.
With dimensions of 25 cm in width, 16 cm in height, and 6.5 cm in depth, AL FARAGH is the perfect size for everyday use. Its versatility is further enhanced by a gold plated chain that can be used to wear the handbag as a shoulder bag or removed entirely to carry it as a clutch.
The AL FARAGH project began in November 2014 in Beirut, Lebanon, and was completed in April 2015. The handbag was first launched at the designers' atelier in Beirut and later exhibited at various summer expositions, including the "Zaytouna Bay - Designers Exhibition" in downtown Beirut.
Chantal & Daisy El Jurdi conducted extensive research to understand the issues women face with their handbags. Through one-on-one interviews and written surveys, they discovered that the problem of where to place a bag while dining out was a common concern. This led to the creation of AL FARAGH, the first in a series of handbags designed to address specific issues faced by women.
The design process for AL FARAGH presented its own challenges. The void had to be carefully crafted to ensure both strength and aesthetic appeal. Multiple samples were created before the final design was approved. The use of two different types of leather, as well as the desire for flawless finishing, added further complexity to the production process.
AL FARAGH has garnered recognition for its unique design. In 2016, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fashion and Travel Accessories Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skill, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
AL FARAGH is not just a handbag; it is a solution to a common dilemma faced by women. With its innovative void and stylish design, it offers both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Chantal & Daisy El Jurdi have created a handbag that not only meets the needs of women but also adds a touch of sophistication to their everyday lives.
