Michael Yim's inspiration for CabinR came from a personal experience of theft during travel. Recognizing the rising trend of theft during flights, Yim set out to design a travel bag that not only secures belongings but also provides peace of mind while traveling. The result is CabinR, a series of two travel bags - a messenger bag and a backpack - that are equipped with electronic anti-theft technology which sounds an alarm if tampered with.
What sets CabinR apart from other travel bags is its unique security feature. The bags are designed to seamlessly mate with an anti-theft security blanket invented by Yim. This blanket, made of soft material with multiple circuit boards inside, includes highly sensitive sensors that detect movement and orientation. Normal movement of the bag won't trigger the alarm, but if the blanket is moved in a way that suggests theft activity, a loud alarm will sound.
Aside from their innovative security feature, CabinR bags also boast other unique features such as a magnetic headphone dock plate and a luggage handle strap. The security blanket can be detached and used separately to secure any type of bag, adding to the versatility of the product.
The creation of CabinR involved many cycles of prototypes for both the travel bags and the underlying technology. These were refined through focus groups and user beta-testing. The biggest challenge, according to Yim, was designing travel bags that were aesthetically pleasing, functional, and seamlessly integrated with the anti-theft technology. This required the creation of countless prototypes of both the travel bags and the anti-theft security blanket.
The CabinR travel bag collection includes the Vista Messenger and the Discovery Backpack. Both bags have over eighteen features specially designed for travelers. The patented anti-theft technology is embedded in the two travel bags via a snap-on security blanket that can distinguish between normal movement and theft activity.
For his innovative design, Michael Yim was awarded Silver in the A' Fashion and Travel Accessories Design Award in 2018. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. CabinR's unique design and functionality certainly fit this description, offering a new level of security for travelers worldwide.
