Changer: The Shape-Shifting Luggage by Xuhui Chen

Inspired by Armor, Designed for Modern Travel

Changer, a unique luggage concept by Xuhui Chen, redefines travel convenience with its innovative ability to adjust size according to the traveler's needs. Inspired by the stacking of armor, this design brings a new level of flexibility to the luggage industry.

The motivation behind Changer was the diverse experiences of travel. Recognizing that the size of luggage needed for a trip varies greatly among individuals and occasions, the design team aimed to create a luggage solution that could adapt to these changing needs. The result is a luggage piece that can expand or contract in size, offering a versatile solution for modern travelers.

Constructed primarily from ABC+PC material, Changer boasts impact resistance, high hardness, and strong toughness. The four corners are reinforced with aluminum metal for added protection. The luggage measures 34.4cm in length, 23cm in width, and 56.8cm in height when compact, and expands to 48.4cm in length, 31cm in width, and 76.8cm in height when fully extended.

The operation of Changer is simple and intuitive. In its compact form, it functions as a standard small suitcase. When larger storage is needed, the user simply turns a knob on the front of the case and pulls out the inner parts, transforming the small suitcase into a larger one. The knob is then turned in the opposite direction to lock the suitcase in its expanded form.

The design process for Changer began in Milan in September 2020 and concluded in February 2021. The finished product was exhibited in China later that same month. The project was driven by research indicating a market demand for a more versatile luggage solution, as many people purchase multiple suitcases to accommodate different travel needs. The design team, led by Xuhui Chen and including designer Qianwei Wang, overcame challenges related to the complex internal structure of the luggage and the machining qualification rate.

Changer was awarded Silver in the A' Fashion and Travel Accessories Design Award in 2021, a testament to its innovative design and practical application. This design, admired for its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcases a remarkable level of excellence and introduces positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
