McKaba's design is simple yet effective. The ShelfPack is equipped with shelves that can be arranged with personal items, dropped into the case, and zipped shut. Upon arrival at a destination, the user unzips the case, raises the supports, and lifts the shelves. The gear remains organized, easily visible, and accessible. The lid of the suitcase stands vertically, providing easy access to the front pockets.
The ShelfPack was developed over a decade, with McKaba dismantling existing luggage for parts and creating multiple prototypes. These prototypes were tested on family trips and loaned to friends for feedback. The final product is made with standard luggage components and minimal custom tooling, which reduces production costs and upfront expenses.
Despite the challenges of turning an idea into a successful product while maintaining his day job, McKaba was able to introduce the ShelfPack at the 2015 Travel Goods Show in Las Vegas, where it was awarded the show's "Buzz" award for the best new product. A subsequent Kickstarter campaign reached its funding goal in just three days.
Measuring 26"x18"x14" and weighing 14 lbs., the ShelfPack is a practical solution for travelers. It eliminates the need to unpack or dig through luggage to find items, keeping everything neatly organized and easily accessible. McKaba describes it as the biggest revolution in luggage since the introduction of rolling bags in the 1980s.
The ShelfPack's innovative design and practical functionality have earned it well-deserved recognition. The Golden A' Design Award, granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations, reflects McKaba's prodigy and wisdom. His design embodies extraordinary excellence and significantly impacts the world with its desirable characteristics. The ShelfPack is not just a suitcase; it's a game-changer in the world of travel.
