Optique Bench: Functional Art Piece Inspired by Nature

A Unique Furniture Design by Albert Potgieter

Many of Albert Potgieter's inspiration comes from the awe of observing nature, the lines and shapes that it produces. The Optique Bench design is no exception. The inspiration came whilst being on the family game farm in South Africa, observing tree lines, golden grass fields waving in the wind and the many intricacies of the bushveld. The design idea that started in South Africa, together with the need to produce an environmentally friendly design by using off-cut pieces of wood, turned into the first prototype of the Optique bench. This design still carries those raw, wild yet linear lines and awe that is seen in nature.

The Optique bench, designed by Albert Potgieter, is a functional art piece that brings a unique atmosphere to any room. Its visual aspect, hence the name Optique, captures attention and gives the impression of movement and life. Drawing inspiration from the natural beauty of South Africa, the bench carries the essence of nature and wildness, making it a truly special and distinctive design.

The core of the Optique bench's design is to attract and enhance the space it fills. It serves as a gathering point, inviting people to come together and engage in conversation. This functional art piece not only adds aesthetic value to a home but also changes the atmosphere, creating a sense of comfort and community.

The Optique bench is meticulously handmade using solid hardwood. Each piece is cut, positioned, and glued together, gradually building up the larger structure. The production process focuses on using only wood and glue, with a small bolt added to the bottom of the leg for a touch of detail.

With dimensions of 1600mm in length, 550mm in width, and 450mm in height, the Optique bench is designed to fit seamlessly into various interior spaces.

Albert Potgieter's research for this design was an ongoing process, constantly observing and appreciating the abstract forms and natural lines found in nature. This accumulation of inspiration and observation culminated in the creation of the Optique bench.

The design process presented several challenges, including ensuring the bench's durability and strength. Initially, screws were used at every joint, but this caused wood splitting and compromised the design's integrity. The solution was to rely solely on wood glue, reinforcing each joint with a wooden dowel or domino for added strength. Another creative challenge was achieving the perfect angle for the wood pieces in the legs, ensuring a seamless joint without gaps or splits. The finishing phase also required meticulous attention to detail, as sanding and oiling each individual piece of wood was necessary to maintain consistency in aesthetics.

The Optique bench has been recognized for its excellence and innovation, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in 2022. This prestigious award honors well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Optique bench stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.

Experience the unique blend of art, nature, and functionality with the Optique bench, a true masterpiece by Albert Potgieter.
