The Collector: A Masterpiece of Wine Cellar Design

Zsolt Szalai's Award-Winning Design Combines Functionality and Artistry

The inspiration for "The Collector" came from a three-floor house that was being constructed. As the construction was in full swing, Szalai envisioned a wine cellar that would be the centerpiece of the house. The design is a perfect blend of stability and airiness, achieved by combining burnished steel frames with partially colored insulating glass.

What sets "The Collector" apart from other wine cellars is its unique properties. It is a handmade design, crafted specifically for wine enthusiasts. With special temperature control, it provides ample space for cooling, storing, and collecting wine. On the opposite side of the cellar, there is a pivot door, also handmade of burnish steel, featuring colored glass in its recesses.

The design was realized using DuPont Corian, burnished steel, and insulating glass, some of which were colored, some transparent. The burnished steel underwent a special treatment developed by Szalai, a secret technology that gives the steel a unique effect. This meticulous process of surface treatment and hand production makes each piece one-of-a-kind.

The project was executed from May to June 2021, in Brunn am Gebirge, Austria. The initial plan was to have two wine refrigerators, but Szalai was motivated to create something more special. He believed that collecting and drinking wine is a special form of art and thus, "The Collector" was born. The design uses subtle color accents in the form of colored glass to create a sense of coziness. These semi-transparent colors can be found in the glass front of the wine cellar and the openings of the pivot door.

"The Collector" has been recognized for its outstanding design and innovation, winning the Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2023. This award is given to designs that demonstrate exceptional creativity, professional excellence, and innovation. The award is a testament to Szalai's artistic skill and technical expertise, and his ability to evoke positive feelings, amazement, and wonder through his designs.
