Shinsaibashi Project: A Modern Transformation of a Historic Old House

Renovating Tradition into Contemporary Art

The historic old house in Shinsaibashi, Osaka has been renovated as a restaurant and wine bar, combining traditional Japanese architectural design with modern elements. Designed by Takako Yoshikawa, this project breathes new life into a space that once belonged to the 8th generation Kabuki actor, Raizo Ichikawa.

The Shinsaibashi Project is a unique endeavor that showcases the beauty of Japan's architectural heritage while creating a comfortable and clean new space. The entrance features a door from the end of the Edo period, and the walls are adorned with mosaic tiles depicting Ito Jakuchu's paintings. The materials used, such as lattice, plaster, red carpet, brass, and terracotta tiles, blend traditional Japanese aesthetics with Western influences from the Taisho era.

What sets this design apart is its ability to retain the old taste of the historic folk house while transforming it into a contemporary art space. The careful preservation of the original structure, combined with the integration of modern elements, creates a unique and visually stunning environment.

The Shinsaibashi Project was realized through a meticulous process that involved combining traditional Japanese materials with Western-inspired elements. The result is a two-story wooden structure that underwent a full renovation, covering a total area of 143m2.

Takako Yoshikawa, along with the artistic direction of Kasetu Sousou Inc., successfully created a space that not only functions as a restaurant and wine bar but also evokes a sense of timelessness. The design aims to make visitors feel like they are immersed in beautiful art, with the space's value increasing as time passes.

The project began in March 2020 and has garnered recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the German Design Award in February 2022 and received the Bronze A' Design Award for Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design. These accolades highlight the project's outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, showcasing its contribution to improving the quality of life.

The Shinsaibashi Project has not only transformed the atmosphere of the street but has also increased the value of the surrounding area. By repurposing a historic old house into a contemporary space, Takako Yoshikawa has successfully bridged the gap between tradition and modernity, creating a design that is both visually captivating and culturally significant.
