The inspiration for "Box in a Box" came from the apartment's inherent architectural challenges. The presence of columns and beams, typically considered a design drawback, became the focal point of Lam's design. He ingeniously incorporated these elements into his design, turning them into unique features that add character to the space.
Unlike many Manhattan Loft style apartments, "Box in a Box" exudes a warm and soft ambiance, thanks to the natural sunlight filtering through the windows. The apartment has been divided into five functional areas - the foyer, dining area with an open kitchen, living area, guest room, and a children's suite. The original guest room was modified to create a larger master bedroom with an en suite bathroom and walk-in closet.
The design process involved several stages, starting with a preliminary meeting to understand the clients' needs. This was followed by design meetings to fine-tune the design, ensuring it was a perfect fit for the clients. Lam monitored the entire construction process, from start to finish, ensuring every detail was executed to perfection.
The materials used in the construction of "Box in a Box" include laminated floorings, wood veneers, marble, concrete, and tiles. The project, which started and ended within nine months in 2015, was a challenging one due to the apartment's irregular shape and the presence of beams and columns. However, Lam's innovative approach turned these challenges into design opportunities, resulting in a unique and functional living space.
The "Box in a Box" design is a testament to Samuel Chun Him Lam's innovative approach and exceptional design skills. It showcases his ability to transform a space with inherent architectural challenges into a modern and spacious living area. This design not only won him the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award but also left a lasting impression on the design industry.
