Yearning for Home: A Gallery-Like Residence by Yu Lung Lee

Breaking the Rules of Traditional Residences

Instead of the traditional ways for spatial arrangements, the Yearning for Home design by Yu Lung Lee is made as an open-end space. The preserved walls, trap door design, curves, and color contrast echo each other, while the expansive windows bring in sunlight that outlines the pureness of white, grey, and tones of wood. This gallery-like residence allows each vista and corner to be appreciated and enjoyed by users.

The Yearning for Home design breaks the rules of traditional residences by knocking through the initial base, creating an expansive structure. Only one bedroom area that connects the secondary bedroom is built, allowing for a more open and spacious feel. The private area is designed with a trap door and cement paints in shades of grey, reflecting the television wall of the living room. This space is required for commercial use, therefore the public area is planned using diagonal methods and placed with counters and dining tables as working tables, allowing the user to maintain a private area within the open-end space.

The realization of the Yearning for Home design incorporates various technologies and materials. Hardware elements, cement paints, wooden pieces, lightings, dimming roller shades, double-layered sheers, melamine overlay plywood, rust-imitated bricks, hexagonal bricks, laminate hard plastic sheets in grey tones are all used to bring this design to life.

The unique properties of the Yearning for Home design lie in its attention to detail and thoughtful spatial arrangements. Curved designs are applied in many ways to soften beam-columns and area divisions. The mottled grey cement paints used on the television wall towards the trap doors of the bedroom, storage room, and guest bathroom create different layers of lights and shadows depending on the angle of sunlight. The sofa wall is intermediated with a semi-wooden cabinet that embeds wires and electric sockets, providing both storage and functionality. Curved designs are also extended throughout the television wall and the beam columns, creating a cohesive and visually appealing space.

The Yearning for Home design is characterized by its use of cement paints, lighting transparency, rust-imitated bricks, trap door designs, and curved-shape decorating. These elements come together to create a modern and unique living space.

The design team behind Yearning for Home includes Yu-Lung Lee and Szu-Hui Wang. Together, they have created a space that promotes openness, functionality, and aesthetic appeal.

Located in Daxi Township, Taoyuan City, the Yearning for Home project started in April 2020 and was completed in August 2020. Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted to ensure that the space met the client's needs and incorporated innovative solutions. Challenges, such as perfectly matching the client's beloved 20-times-20 sized tiles, were overcome with ingenuity and attention to detail.

The Yearning for Home design has been recognized for its excellence and innovation. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Yearning for Home design stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.

With its unique spatial arrangements, use of materials, and attention to detail, the Yearning for Home design by Yu Lung Lee offers a refreshing and modern take on residential living.
