Alex Chiang's Award-Winning Design Transforms Shopping into a Stellar Experience

The Xintian 360 Plaza Taikang W Mall is not just a shopping center; it's a commercial complex spanning over 161,543 square meters. Located in a bustling area of Zhengzhou, the mall is surrounded by other prominent establishments, including the Dennis flagship store, China Resources Vientiane City, and Dashang Mart Main Store. Its strategic location, coupled with its unique design, makes it a magnet for both locals and tourists.

Chiang's design concept for the mall is rooted in the dynamic of the interstellar galaxy. The exterior of the building is adorned with silver aluminum panels, chosen for their resemblance to the shining starlight in the night sky. These panels, perforated and shaped into rhythmic waves, evoke images of a galaxy ribbon stretching across the starry sky. The result is a building that not only stands out for its architectural integrity but also for its trend-setting aesthetic.

The interior of the mall is just as impressive. Pale blue and white tones create a serene atmosphere, while the multi-faced shape of the space adds a touch of modernity. Music is a central theme, enhancing the shopping experience with entertainment and interaction. The design aims to redefine the spirit of space by delimiting areas and increasing consumers' recognition and memory of the place.

One of the mall's unique features is its interaction with the city's parks. Large glasses on the north side increase the visibility of the People’s Square hidden in Xitaikang Road, connecting the Xitaikang 360 Plaza as a link to open natural space. Additionally, the terrace garden provides a stable and quiet outdoor space for visitors, while also forming a green visual area and interrupting light pollution for the residents in the city towers.

The Xintian 360 Plaza Taikang W Mall is a testament to Chiang's innovative approach to design. It's no surprise that the project was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2022. This prestigious accolade is given to designs that showcase outstanding expertise and innovation, and Chiang's project certainly fits the bill.
