Gwangjin Kium: Care Center For Children

Integrating Creativity and Care

The Gwangjin Kium is a unique care center designed by Jaesung Kim to provide intensive care for children aged 6 to 12 after school. With its innovative design and thoughtful features, it aims to bridge the care gap when parents are unable to provide supervision.

The Gwangjin Kium stands out from other care centers due to its focus on stimulating creativity, imagination, and the five senses of the children. The walls of the center are integrated with bookstores and amusement facilities, creating an environment that encourages exploration and learning. Each room and corridor is designed to foster open communication between teachers and students, promoting a collaborative and engaging atmosphere.

The color scheme of the center plays a crucial role in creating a calm and comfortable space. The predominant use of green, known for its stability and tranquility, provides a soothing environment for the children. Additionally, the natural birch wood color adds warmth and coziness to the space, making it inviting and homely.

One of the unique features of the Gwangjin Kium is its modular cabinet furniture. Designed to be portable and easily movable, this furniture allows for flexible interaction with the students. It provides an opportunity for dynamic engagement and adaptability, enhancing the overall learning experience.

The Gwangjin Kium spans an area of 10,000mm x 13,000mm, providing ample space for various activities and programs. The center is divided into dynamic and static spaces, allowing for different types of interactions and events. Moving walls can be applied to create a single space when needed, ensuring maximum flexibility and utilization of the facility.

The project for the Gwangjin Kium began in December 2020 and was completed in March 2021. It was developed based on extensive research and analysis of the existing childcare infrastructure and the needs of the community. The aim was to address the gaps in care services and improve the quality of care for elementary school students.

The Gwangjin Kium has received recognition for its outstanding design and functionality. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate innovation, practicality, and adherence to professional and industrial standards. The Gwangjin Kium stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design in creating spaces that positively impact the lives of children.
