Equality: A Gender Neutral Toilet Design in New Taipei City

Creating a Sustainable and Inclusive Public Space

The gender neutral public toilet located in Banqiao Station, New Taipei City, is not just a restroom, but a symbol of progress towards gender equality and inclusivity. Designed by Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan, this innovative project breaks traditional gender barriers and promotes a more sustainable city development.

As one of the most sensitive spaces for gender equality, the design of this public toilet goes beyond the conventional norms. Inspired by the concept of gender neutrality, the color scheme, planning, and lighting have been carefully chosen to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all users.

The unique properties of this gender neutral toilet lie not only in its design, but also in its location. Banqiao Station serves as the main transportation hub for New Taipei City, catering to a large number of commuters. By incorporating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda of the city, this toilet design contributes to the overall sustainability and progress of the city.

The realization of this design is a result of advanced technology and thoughtful construction. The interior space is constructed using ceramic tiles and high-density plastic partition walls. Each toilet stall is equipped with an air duct system that creates negative pressure, effectively eliminating any unpleasant odors.

Technical specifications of the design include a total area of 80 square meters and a ceiling height of 2.7 meters. These specifications ensure a spacious and comfortable experience for users.

Interacting with this gender neutral toilet is made easy through clear signage and indicators. A signal indicator at the entrance shows which toilet stalls are available, along with descriptions of the type of toilet, such as urinal, western, or eastern, and whether it is handicap-accessible. The toilet complex also features a large sink counter at a kid-friendly height, promoting good hygiene habits among children. Additionally, the integrated mirror green wall provides a touch of nature and enhances user comfort.

The design project for this gender neutral toilet began in May 2021 with the proposal stage, followed by finalizing the design in August. Demolition of the existing toilet took place in October, and the project was completed in December of the same year.

The underlying research for this design focused on achieving gender equality through design solutions. Gender equality is one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is a significant social issue. New Taipei City has been actively addressing SDGs in its city development, making this gender-neutral public toilet project a milestone in the city's progress.

Designing a gender-neutral toilet came with its own set of challenges. The team had to carefully consider elements such as color choices, circulation, signage, and lighting to create a welcoming atmosphere that promotes inclusivity. The green wall at the mirror also showcases innovation in water usage by utilizing gray water generated from the sink, further contributing to sustainability.

Located in Banqiao Station, New Taipei City, this project not only promotes gender equality but also ensures accessibility for individuals who require assistance. As the central transportation hub, Banqiao Station plays a crucial role in the daily lives of many citizens. By breaking down barriers and providing a safe and inclusive space, this gender neutral toilet design contributes to a better quality of life for all.

This design was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The gender neutral toilet design stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.
