The inspiration for the book came from Meszaros' own childhood fears of losing his grandparents. The story follows a young boy named Frank who embarks on a journey to find his missing Granny. Along the way, he befriends a frog, a character inspired by various mythological symbols and characters from Meszaros' life. The frog, a creature known for its ability to traverse different realms in shaman culture, serves as a guide for Frank as he navigates his emotions and ultimately learns to let go.
Frank and the Frog stands out for its unique approach to storytelling. The book's design features manual linework and textures, digitally composed and colorized, creating a visually engaging experience for readers. The book's layout also plays a significant role in the storytelling, with each page designed to guide the reader's eyes from left to right and onto the next page. Contrasting elements, such as complex and minimal compositions or high and low perspectives, are paired up on adjacent spreadsheets to maintain reader interest.
The book's dimensions, 300 mm in width and height and 15 mm in depth, make it a perfect fit for children's hands. The 12 fully illustrated pages are filled with captivating illustrations that not only tell a story but also provide a comforting escape for those dealing with loss.
Despite the challenging subject matter, Meszaros managed to create a kid-friendly narrative around death. The book's main intention is to tell a beautiful story and help children understand such a complex topic. The book's success is a testament to Meszaros' skill and sensitivity as a designer and storyteller.
Frank and the Frog is a testament to the power of design and storytelling. It serves as a reminder that even the most complex and difficult topics can be approached in a sensitive and understanding manner. The book's success and recognition are well-deserved, and it is sure to continue making a positive impact on its readers.
