Joaquim: A Tribute to Versatility and Sustainability in Furniture Design

Designer Pedro Galaso's Joaquim, a Multi-functional Piece Inspired by Joaquim Tenreiro

Introducing Joaquim, a multi-functional piece of furniture designed by Pedro Galaso. This innovative design, inspired by Joaquim Tenreiro, offers a unique blend of form and function, serving as a bookshelf, a dividing screen, and a mobile vertical garden. The design, which won the Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2022, is a testament to Galaso's commitment to versatility, sustainability, and artisanal craftsmanship.

Galaso's Joaquim is a tribute to his mentor, Joaquim Tenreiro, whose work Trelica inspired this unique piece. The design aims to connect people with nature, a trend that has gained prominence during the pandemic. The versatility of Joaquim allows it to cater to a broad audience, its functionality dictated by its placement in a room. This 3-in-1 piece prioritizes the multi-functionality of furniture, making it a standout in contemporary design.

The unique properties of Joaquim lie in its material and construction. Crafted from carbon steel and pink peroba, the piece is the result of skilled labor from master locksmiths and cabinetmakers. The body of Joaquim is a 5/8" tubular metal structure, with 21 shelves of 18mm thickness in an oval format. Its round pine base with a matte varnish finish and adjustable rubber caps adds to its aesthetic appeal and functionality.

Galaso's design process involved extensive research into sustainable materials, hinge types, and stability calculations. The selection of carbon steel and pink peroba was based on their low environmental impact, short production time, value for money, and accessibility. The design has received positive reviews from users, particularly for its ability to bring a sense of nature into urban living spaces.

Creating Joaquim was not without its challenges. Galaso aimed to use as few material types as possible to minimize environmental impact. The materials used, carbon steel from steel industry remnants and pink peroba from demolished manors, are both reusable and less abundant. The simple features and lines of the design were intended to reduce manufacturing time and incorporate handicraft art in the twisting of the steel and final touches on the wood.

Joaquim is a testament to Galaso's innovative approach to furniture design. Its versatility, strong personality, and connection with nature make it a unique piece that caters to a wide audience. With its award-winning design, Joaquim is set to redefine the way we perceive and use furniture in our living spaces.
