Revitalizing Wuhan's Industrial Heritage: Aedas' Multifunctional Masterpiece

Aedas' Sunac Wuhan 1890 Plot 32: A Harmonious Blend of History, Innovation, and Urban Development

Wuhan, once the site of China's first modern iron and steel works, is now home to a unique architectural marvel. Aedas, a global architectural firm, has breathed new life into the city's industrial heritage, transforming it into a multifunctional building that serves as a cultural icon and city landmark.

The Sunac Wuhan 1890 Plot 32 project by Aedas is a testament to the city's rich industrial history. The design team drew inspiration from the multitude of industrial sites within the B, C, and D plots of the area, including a steel bar plant, electric furnace branch, and steel truss warehouse. The aim was to regenerate the city's memory and create a cultural icon that would invigorate the deserted park.

What sets this design apart is its respect for the city's history and its innovative approach to urban development. Aedas' priority was to inject new life into the old buildings while preserving their original structure. The rebirth of the old factory building involved not only repair and renovation but also the endowment of new functions, making it an integral part of the citizens' lives.

The realization of this design involved the use of red bricks and concrete materials to restore the original texture of the buildings. The existing structure was retained, and the roof was renovated with modern materials, referencing the original style. Glass skylights were added to enhance indoor lighting, and the metal corrugated panels on the facade were replaced with polycarbonate panels for a more robust exterior.

The design's interaction with its surroundings is another noteworthy aspect. Located conveniently near the Beijing-Guangzhou railway and Jiangcheng Avenue, the development is easily accessible. It is also surrounded by significant cultural markers, further enhancing its appeal as a social leisure destination.

The design process was not without its challenges. The design team had to preserve the historical characteristics and existing elements of the buildings while carrying out restoration and reconstruction. However, Aedas successfully overcame these challenges, resulting in a design that combines industrial culture with contemporary art.

The Sunac Wuhan 1890 Plot 32 project is a testament to Aedas' commitment to preserving history while pushing the boundaries of design and innovation. The project was awarded Silver in the A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2022, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.
