Shenzhen's Innovative Satellite Concourse: A New Benchmark in Aviation Architecture

GDAD and Aedas' Award-Winning Design Revolutionizes Travel Experience

Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport's Satellite Concourse, a collaborative design by GDAD and Aedas, sets a new standard in aviation architecture. This innovative design, which won the Platinum A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2022, combines functionality and aesthetics to create a delightful travel experience.

The Satellite Concourse is a crucial part of the expansion project of one of the most significant aviation hubs in South China. Designed to accommodate the airport's growing needs, it is expected to serve up to 22 million passengers annually. The concourse is strategically located on the airport's central axis, efficiently connected to Terminal 3 and the future Terminal 2 by the Automated People Mover system, as well as the baggage handling and goods delivery systems.

The design's unique properties lie in its optimized X-shape plan configuration, which allows smooth and efficient airfield operations. This layout also ensures a short walking distance for passengers, enhancing their travel experience. The signature streamlined elliptical section gives the concourse its unique appearance and spatial character, while the layout of the roof skylights brings natural light deep into the building's heart.

Notably, the design incorporates advanced technology to achieve energy efficiency. The dynamic external facade shading devices significantly reduce heat gain, and together with internal shading systems, contribute to energy saving. These shading devices were organized into four modular types using advanced software optimization, which helped save cost and allow rapid construction.

The Satellite Concourse also features two outdoor landscaped viewing platforms, offering views of the Shenzhen cityscape and the Pearl River estuary. These, along with numerous innovative green features, have earned the Satellite Concourse its GBEL Three-Star Certification.

The Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport Satellite Concourse is not just an infrastructure project; it is a testament to the power of innovative design in transforming the travel experience. As the recipient of the prestigious Platinum A' Design Award, it is recognized for its exceptional and highly innovative design that showcases unmatched professionalism, contributes to societal wellbeing, and makes the world a better place.
