Sable Park: A Commercial Development with a Unique Twist

Distinct floating boxes create a stunning architectural masterpiece

Sable Park, a commercial twin development located in Century City, Cape Town, is making waves with its innovative design and stunning aesthetic. Designed by dhk Architects, this development stands out with its distinct floating boxes that veer off and cantilever beyond one another, creating a truly unique architectural masterpiece.

The inspiration behind Sable Park's design came from the concept of shuffling forms that operate independently and adapt to their surroundings. The buildings' composition was meticulously crafted to appear as a single large complex while also maintaining the appearance of four small independent volumes. This duality adds a dynamic element to the development, making it visually captivating from every angle.

One of the standout features of Sable Park is its unobstructed views of Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean. The development comprises two four-storey buildings with two levels of underground parking, offering panoramic views of the surrounding natural beauty. The design also prioritizes optimal orientation, ensuring that each space within the development benefits from maximum views and natural light.

The realization of Sable Park's design involved a careful consideration of its facade. The north and south blocks were inverted, resulting in four similar yet unique blocks. The atrium, a central feature of the development, is enclosed by full-height double glazed curtain walls on both the entrance and rear faces of each block. This design choice not only enhances the visual appeal of the development but also allows for increased levels of daylight penetration and external views.

Technical specifications of the design include a two-metre-wide module for the curtain wall and a smaller 1200mm module for the shopfront. The brise-soleil, a feature that provides passive solar control, is modulated to match the shopfront and offers a 16-20% cover to the area of glazing. The combination of these elements creates a facade that not only enhances the occupant's comfort and productivity but also contributes to the overall sustainability of the development.

The design of Sable Park also prioritizes functionality and connectivity. The twin blocks are orientated inwards to Bridgeways Road, where both entrances are located. The two buildings are split into two wings, connected by a series of bridges spanning across the atrium. This design choice creates a sense of unity and circulation, allowing people to move seamlessly through the development.

Completed in May 2018, Sable Park is a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of dhk Architects. This commercial development not only stands out for its stunning design but also for its commitment to sustainability and occupant comfort. It is a true architectural gem that adds a touch of sophistication to the Century City skyline.
