RGB Hotel: A Harmonious Blend of Nature and Modernity

Xiaobing Yao's Award-Winning Design Fuses Traditional and Contemporary Elements

RGB Hotel, designed by Xiaobing Yao, is a unique architectural marvel that harmoniously blends the local natural landscape, primitive architecture, and modern life. The design, which was awarded Silver in A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2022, is a testament to Yao's innovative approach and commitment to sustainability.

Located in Kangding, Sichuan, the RGB Hotel is a testament to Yao's innovative design approach. The hotel's design is inspired by the local lifestyle and national culture, aiming to convey the brand positioning of visualization, youth, and life through modern design methods. The three elements of the design - red representing sunrise and sunset, green symbolizing ecological jungle, and blue implying sky hot spring - perfectly fit the brand's positioning.

The hotel stands out for its open and public architecture, designed to serve more people while blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment and traditional culture. The main materials used in the project include art paint, wood floor tiles, tung oil bark, steel structure, ecological large stone pieces, and original wind wood. The choice of materials echoes the local traditional way, further enhancing the hotel's connection with its surroundings.

One of the unique features of the RGB Hotel is the independent bubble pool in each guest room, which continuously supplies flowing hot springs for residents through thermal energy conversion. This innovative feature not only provides a luxurious experience for the guests but also helps avoid energy waste and environmental pollution caused by large consumption of electricity and natural gas.

The hotel covers a total of 15,000 square meters, with the design project starting in December 2020 and finishing in August 2021. The design team, including Baoan Luo and inbei Zhao, faced several challenges during the project, such as retaining the broken wall, a key element in the dissemination of beauty and protection of ancient buildings.

Despite these challenges, the team managed to create a design that is both modern and respectful of the local culture. The second floor uses a contemporary architectural system, but the material selection echoes the local traditional way. The roof is made of local bark soaked in tung oil, combined with a modern white wall to deduce the beauty of ancient and modern integration.

In conclusion, the RGB Hotel is a perfect example of how modern design can coexist harmoniously with traditional elements and natural surroundings. The design, which has been recognized with a prestigious A' Design Award, is a testament to Xiaobing Yao's innovative approach and commitment to sustainability. The hotel not only provides a luxurious experience for its guests but also serves as a model for future sustainable and culturally respectful designs.
