The Nurim Circuit stands out as a collaborative design effort between local consultants, ensuring a harmonious integration with the surrounding environment. The boardwalk's snake-like curvature follows the natural bending river, creating an organic flow that seamlessly blends into the landscape. Constructed mostly off-site using Meccano principles, the boardwalk minimizes disturbance to the actual site, preserving its natural beauty.
With remote access and a steep site, the design team faced several challenges in constructing the Nurim Circuit. However, they found inspiration in the building principles of Meccano and Lego, allowing them to construct the boardwalk in transportable smaller sections. This innovative approach reduced the need for extensive on-site construction and scaffolding, ensuring safety while minimizing the project's environmental impact.
The materials chosen for the Nurim Circuit, including steel and hardwood timber, were carefully selected to minimize the risk of fire. Additionally, local indigenous artwork panels are integrated throughout the boardwalk, adding cultural significance and enhancing the visitor's experience.
Functionally, the Nurim Circuit was designed to be wheelchair-friendly and non-obtrusive, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the natural surroundings. The boardwalk serves as a vessel for experiencing the breathtaking views and the tranquility of the national park, while ensuring cost-effectiveness and low ongoing maintenance.
The Nurim Circuit, completed in November 2018, has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2019. This prestigious award acknowledges the Nurim Circuit's creative ingenuity and its contribution to improving the quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
