Shingle Residence L011: A Masterpiece of Architecture by Stephan Maria Lang

Harmonizing Natural Splendor with Architectural Design

Stephan Maria Lang's Shingle Residence L011, a residential house, is a perfect harmony of architectural design and natural splendor. This award-winning design, with its unique properties and innovative realization technology, offers a refreshing perspective on residential architecture.

The inspiration behind Shingle Residence L011 lies in the plastic beauty of the building, designed to blend seamlessly with its surroundings while catering to the needs of a large family. The project's beauty lies in hidden details, surprising views, and the interplay of light and shadow. It integrates landscape, garden, and interior into a Gesamtkunstwerk, an integrated and holistic masterpiece of architecture.

The residence's unique properties are evident in its l-shaped structure, which takes different lighting situations into account. The ground floor provides inside-outside space for food preparation, cooking, dining, and living, while the upper floor houses individual rooms. A two-story studio window allows the western mystic light to filter through an old hornbeam tree in the center outside. Generous openings to nature in the morning and evening contribute to the magical natural ambiance that makes this place special.

Shingle Residence L011 is realized using a variety of materials, including concrete, copper, larchwood shingles, glass, and steel. These raw materials absorb light, with larchwood shingles and copper cladding outside reflecting nature to the inside. The house, spanning an area of 2200 sqm, is a testament to the designer's commitment to using natural materials and light to create a harmonious living environment.

The design process involved a team of professionals, including architect Hans Kreye and interior designer Diana Hess. The project, which started in 2016 in Munich, was completed in 2019. The design research focused on the poetic dimension of natural light, the discovery of shadow, and the light touch of sunlight. The intention was to create rooms that touch the heart and soul, bringing an immediate physical involvement of the people in the changing seasons and highlighting the interdependence between humans and the natural environment.

Shingle Residence L011 has been recognized for its outstanding design, winning the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2022. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The design, admired for its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcases a remarkable level of excellence and introduces positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
