Huanggang Port: Aedas' Architectural Marvel

Award-winning design fuses functionality, sustainability, and aesthetics

Aedas' design for the new Huanggang Port is a testament to the firm's innovative approach to architecture. The design is inspired by the concept of 'the cornerstone', symbolizing the port's potential as the foundation of the Greater Bay Area. The interior design draws from Shenzhen's emblem flower, the Bougainvillea, resulting in a distinctive roof motif that embodies the vibrant spirit of Shenzhen.

The Huanggang Port stands out for its efficiency, adaptability, and commitment to sustainability. Located in the privileged Lok Ma Chau Loop, the port is connected to the existing Futian Port and Shenzhen-HK Cooperation Zone by two green axes. Three metro and two inter-city lines provide easy access to the site, making it a highly accessible and convenient transportation hub.

The design's unique properties are further enhanced by its green DNA. A series of light wells on the rooftop maximize daylight access and significantly improve indoor natural lighting. The integration of greenery on the roof acts like a 'sponge', purifying, draining, and even recycling rainwater. This not only reduces heat gain but also improves the roof's thermal insulation, making the port a green and sustainable infrastructure.

The realization of the Huanggang Port design was not without its challenges. The compact site of only 87,500 sqm had to accommodate 80,000 sqm of inspection halls and 100,000 sqm of crossing and non-crossing traffic. Aedas' solution was a 'stacking strategy', using different levels for different traffic types and orienting passenger crossing direction from south to north to minimize travel distance and ensure easy access to metro stations.

The Huanggang Port design has earned Aedas the prestigious Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2022. This accolade is granted to outstanding creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, advance art, science, design, and technology, and significantly impact the world with their desirable characteristics.
