Grasp the Light: A Zen-like Minimal Residence by Hong-Yu Ou

Redesigning an Old House with Transparency and Functionality

The 40-year-old house is redecorated with a washed finish, granite, and architectural concrete on the exterior, with red bricks, cedar, and cypress paved on the inside. Meanwhile, steel frames and glass materials are also used to create a Zen-like minimal style. Since the structure is narrow and long, which gives disadvantages of gloomy and poor ventilation conditions, the designer opened up the ceiling to draw natural lightings to increase brightness at any time of the day. While users can enjoy the sky scenery, the adjustments have also increased transparency and ventilation for the living space.

Hong-Yu Ou, a renowned designer, has transformed an old house into a stunning residence called "Grasp the Light." This project showcases the perfect blend of art, architecture, and design, resulting in a unique living space that prioritizes transparency and functionality.

The key feature of this project is the glass-made rooftop, which solves the initial lack of brightness issue. By opening up the ceiling, natural light floods the interior, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. The glass mask on the roof not only increases transparency but also provides a stunning view of the sky, allowing residents to connect with nature.

To maximize space efficiency, cabinets are strategically placed on the sides of the glass rooftop. These cabinets serve as partitions, replacing traditional walls and creating a seamless flow between different areas. Ironware and glass-made bricks are used to maintain transparency while adding a touch of elegance.

Another remarkable aspect of "Grasp the Light" is the hallway on the high second floor, which connects to the adjacent villa where the residents' relatives live. This design promotes interaction and strengthens family bonds. Additionally, the cathedral ceilings on the second floor feature a book wall made of solid wood, providing a focal point and extending towards the first floor, complementing the steel frames and glass treads. The result is a space that exudes transparency and functionality while eliminating the pressure brought by traditional stairs.

The materials used in this project include cedar, cypress, steel frames, granite, red bricks, and glass. The combination of these elements creates a harmonious and visually appealing aesthetic. The glass mask on the roof, although occupying some space height, is cleverly utilized by incorporating cabinets on the sides, maximizing overall space efficiency.

The "Grasp the Light" residence spans across three floors, with a total area of 75 pings. The first floor comprises an entryway, living room, dining room, kitchen, study, front yard, and backyard. The second floor houses the leisure and workout area, master bedroom, master bathroom, dressing room, and working space. The third floor features a secondary bedroom and a working space.

Throughout the design process, Hong-Yu Ou focused on creating a low-key and rustic living environment that suits the needs of the family. The use of architectural concrete, washed finish, and solid-wood-made doors adds warmth and character to the space. The integration of a farming area in the garden and the configuration of the 2.5th floor further enhance the overall living experience.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was the narrow and long structure of the original house. To overcome this, the designer boldly applied transparent materials on the roof to improve ventilation and lighting conditions. Stable and solid building materials were also used to ensure safety while maintaining an aesthetic sense. Additionally, the front yard was transformed into a gardening scenery, seamlessly connecting the exterior and interior.

The kitchen and dining room feature a long, solid wood dining table, creating a communal space for family gatherings. The bamboo materials on the ceiling add a rustic touch, echoing the overall theme of the residence. French windows in the living room increase transparency and provide a seamless connection to the outdoor environment.

"Grasp the Light" is a testament to Hong-Yu Ou's creativity and ingenuity. This project has received recognition and was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills while contributing to improvements in quality of life.

With "Grasp the Light," Hong-Yu Ou has successfully transformed an old house into a modern and functional residence that embraces transparency, functionality, and the beauty of natural light. This project serves as an inspiration for those looking to revitalize their living spaces while maintaining a harmonious connection with the surrounding environment.
