Farmer House in Kudara

A Modern Country Home Designed by Masato Sekiya

Located near the historic Kudara Temple in Nara, Japan

The Farmer House in Kudara, designed by Masato Sekiya, is a unique country home that blends harmoniously with its surroundings. Inspired by the beautiful paddy fields and the need to preserve the landscape, the design features a low-rise volume that allows sunlight to filter through and does not obstruct the surrounding farmland.

One of the standout features of this design is the innovative rainwater cooling system. In a location known for its hot and humid summers, it was crucial to prevent the large roof from overheating the entire house. The rainwater collected on the roof is channeled into a central atrium and pumped back up to the roof, where it cools the house through evaporation. This sustainable solution not only keeps the house comfortable but also reduces the environmental impact.

The design also takes advantage of the limited space by incorporating a curved roof deck, which serves as a playground for children. Despite the narrow site, the house provides ample functional space, including storage areas, a TV room, a piano area, a refrigerator, a washbasin, and a workspace. The bedrooms, dining room, and other living spaces are dynamically connected through a courtyard, creating a practical and efficient layout.

Constructed using a wooden structure, the Farmer House in Kudara showcases the seamless integration of traditional and modern design elements. The use of natural materials adds warmth and character to the home, while the innovative rainwater cooling system and thoughtful spatial planning demonstrate the designer's commitment to sustainability and functionality.

The Farmer House in Kudara was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2022 for its outstanding creativity and ingenious design. This prestigious accolade recognizes the incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
