The Tridea Project: A Revolutionary Approach to Collaborative Design

Exploring Lisa Winstanley's Award-Winning Design Project Promoting Inclusion and Diversity

Discover the Tridea Project, a unique design initiative that leverages the power of collaboration and diversity to create a visually stunning book. This article delves into the project's conception, realization, and the philosophy behind its creation.

Conceived by Lisa Winstanley, the Tridea Project is a testament to the power of collaborative creative practice. Inspired by the Surrealist parlour game, 'The Exquisite Corpse', the project invites creatives from around the world to contribute, thereby embracing social and cultural diversity. The result is a book that not only documents the project's conception and evolution but also serves as a visual essay discussing the brand values of inclusion and diversity.

The Tridea Project stands out for its meticulous attention to materiality. The book is cloth-bound using fabric from the main colour palette purple, symbolizing creativity and mystery. The text is debossed and printed in a metallic pink foil, adding a touch of magic and playfulness. The cover of the book forms a horizontal triptych, hinting at the 'Tri' aspect of the project: three ideas, three artists, three layers of meaning and creativity.

The design process involved a number of technical specifications. The overall book measures 250mm (w) x 315mm (h) when closed. The cover is made of 135gsm colourplan (amethyst) over 2mm board, while the text is printed on 170gsm maple bright. The three-layered cover of the book provides both practical navigation and visual metaphor.

The project, which started in March 2018 in Singapore and finished in January 2022, explores alternative methods of image production and consumption. It aims to explore diverse and ethical co-creation practices in a virtual space. The challenge was to collage numerous designs by several artists into one collaborative composition, much like a design relay race. The artworks generated are displayed on an online gallery and sold as high-resolution downloads, with all profits donated to the Singaporean charity TWC2; Transient workers Count Too.

The Tridea Project: Culturally Diverse Co-Creation documents the brand's conception and its subsequent evolution. The book design has been crafted with materiality in mind, with each aspect considered and contemplated to metaphorically represent the project values. The project was awarded Silver in A' Print and Published Media Design Award in 2022, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.
