Raices: Sustainable Jewelry by Mayte Ossorio Domecq

Reusing Leather Scraps to Create Unique Pieces

The Raices line of sustainable jewelry, designed by Mayte Ossorio Domecq, draws inspiration from the scales on the wings of birds. By repurposing leather scraps from the manufacture of safety boots, Domecq has created a collection of unique pieces that showcase the beauty and functionality of sustainable design.

The Raices line stands out for its commitment to sustainability and craftsmanship. Domecq's goal was to maximize the use of the oval leather scraps left over from the production of Ombu safety boots. By reusing these materials, she not only reduces waste but also generates one-of-a-kind patterns through color changes.

One of the challenges Domecq faced was minimizing the differences between the leather ovals. Through careful staggering and overlapping, she was able to create pieces that not only hide the variations but also add rigidity and solidity to the designs. The result is a collection that showcases the inherent value of repurposed materials.

The creation process of the Raices collection is entirely manual. Domecq hand-cuts and glues the leather ovals, incorporating studs or rivets to enhance the pieces' character and add a touch of light. The craftsmanship involved in the production ensures the uniqueness and durability of each piece.

The Raices collection features a variety of jewelry pieces, including hoops, bracelets, necklaces, and headbands. The dimensions vary depending on the piece, with hoops measuring 75 x 85mm, bracelets measuring 255 x 70mm, necklaces measuring 400 x 65mm, and headbands measuring 135 x 65mm. The packaging for the collection measures 200 x 150cm.

Interacting with the Raices jewelry is effortless. The pieces are designed to be easily accessible and require no assistance to handle. However, it is important to note that the material requires special care. Domecq advises against getting the jewelry wet, using alcohol on it, and recommends treating it with bitumen or wax to increase its durability.

The development of the Raices line began in 2012, and Domecq has continued to incorporate new pieces and colors into the collection over the years. The collection has been showcased at various fairs, including Expocomer Panama and Maison et Objet, and has been sold to prestigious institutions such as the SF MOMA, as well as in Japan and France.

Domecq's design process for the Raices collection was driven by the need to reuse discarded leather scraps. Through experimentation and scaling techniques, she was able to transform these materials into unique, handcrafted pieces with a focus on durability. The incorporation of scraps from other companies expanded the color palette and enhanced the saleability of the collection.

The Raices collection has been recognized for its outstanding design and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design category in 2022. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate resourcefulness, technical skill, and contribute to improving quality of life.

Mayte Ossorio Domecq's Raices collection is a testament to the beauty and potential of sustainable design. By repurposing leather scraps, Domecq has created a line of jewelry that not only showcases her craftsmanship but also promotes a more sustainable approach to fashion.
