Tai Chi: A Unique Work Desk Inspired by Balance and Comfort

A Balance of Form and Function

Inspired by Chinese Tai Chi, the Tai Chi work desk by Lu Yi combines the principles of Yin and Yang to create a harmonious and functional piece of furniture.

Designed with the needs of office workers, especially designers, in mind, the Tai Chi work desk offers a unique blend of aesthetics and practicality. The design language draws inspiration from the ancient Chinese practice of Tai Chi, which emphasizes the balance between Yin and Yang, softness and hardness. This concept is reflected in the form and structure of the desk, creating a visually striking and functional piece.

One of the standout features of the Tai Chi work desk is its upturned edges on three sides. This design element serves a dual purpose: preventing tools, such as brushes, from falling off the desk while also adding a touch of elegance. The front of the desk features a soft corner cutting design, enhancing user comfort during prolonged use. The overall shape of the desk is reminiscent of Oriental curved surfaces, adding a touch of sophistication to any workspace.

When it comes to the realization of the design, the Tai Chi work desk employs a combination of modern technology and traditional craftsmanship. The desk is modeled using Rhinoceros software and rendered with Keyshot. The metal parts are crafted using CNC processes, while the wood components are made from beech. The most challenging aspect of the manufacturing process lies in creating the curved surfaces, which require a combination of machine and hand craftsmanship.

With dimensions of 1600mm*800mm*710mm, the Tai Chi work desk offers ample workspace for various tasks. Its unique design and attention to detail make it a standout piece in any office environment.

The Tai Chi work desk is not only visually appealing but also highly functional. It can easily accommodate a computer and is particularly well-suited for tasks that require hand-drawn illustrations or designs. The upturned edges provide a convenient place to store tools, ensuring they are within reach whenever needed.

The Tai Chi work desk was designed by Lu Yi and his team at the Syid design studio in Shenyang, China. The project was a result of extensive research into the principles of Tai Chi and how they can be applied to office furniture design. The team overcame various challenges, particularly in creating the curved surfaces that define the desk's unique form.

The exceptional design of the Tai Chi work desk has been recognized with the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2022. This award is a testament to the desk's well-designed, practical, and innovative nature. It meets the highest professional and industrial standards, integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics. The Tai Chi work desk not only enhances productivity but also contributes to a better working environment.
