Brise Table: A Breeze of Innovation in Furniture Design

Wonho Lee's Award-Winning Design Combines Furniture and Fan for Climate-Conscious Living

Wonho Lee's Brise Table, a unique blend of furniture and fan, is a testament to innovative design inspired by the climate emergency. This Silver A' Design Award-winning piece is not just a side table, but a functional fan aimed at promoting a more sustainable lifestyle.

The Brise Table was born out of a desire to address the climate emergency and promote the use of fans over air conditioners. The designer, Wonho Lee, noticed that fans, especially in single-person households, were left unused after summer, taking up unnecessary space. This observation led to the creation of a piece of furniture that could be used year-round, providing a cooling breeze while also serving as a side table.

Unlike traditional fans that create strong winds, the Brise Table focuses on circulating air to create a cooling effect. The name "Brise" comes from the French word for breeze, reflecting the gentle, natural wind the table produces. This design approach not only promotes a cooler environment but also prevents the dizziness that can be caused by stronger winds.

The Brise Table is crafted from acrylic, wood, aluminum, and stainless steel. The control unit is subtly placed at the bottom of the table, maintaining the aesthetic of a piece of furniture while still allowing the user to adjust the fan's power across three stages. The table measures 536mm in width, depth, and 550mm in height, making it a versatile addition to any space.

Lee's design was influenced by the increasing number of single-person households in Korea, particularly among millennials. The need for space-saving solutions and the desire for a more sustainable lifestyle led to the creation of the Brise Table. The design also addresses concerns about dust accumulation on unused fans, a common issue in Seoul due to fine dust pollution.

One of the challenges in the design process was ensuring the table top was adequately supported while also having vents large enough to allow the breeze to flow. Initially, the vents were too small and densely packed, requiring a significant redesign and a change in material from acrylic to aluminum.

The Brise Table is more than just a piece of furniture; it is a statement of responsibility towards climate change and a commitment to sustainable living. It was awarded Silver in the A' Furniture Design Award in 2020, a testament to its innovative design and functionality. This design not only provides a practical solution to everyday living but also contributes to a more sustainable future.
