Ostinato: A Dining Table that Embodies Rhythm and Repetition

Exploring the Expressive Power of Music in Design

When exploring the expressive power of rhythm and repetition, music is the best inspiration. This piece materializes the concept of ostinato - a motif or phrase that persistently repeats in the same musical voice, frequently at the same pitch. In music and in this piece, the base/basso ostinato constructed as a repetitive pattern is the pillar that supports and emphasizes the rich musical harmonies that are developing on top.

Ostinato is a design object that explores rhythm and repetition as ways to transform materials. It is a dining table that stands out with its unique properties and exquisite craftsmanship. The table's design is characterized by a dimensional, linear, rigorous, and repetitive pattern that is over-imposed on the natural fiber of solid wood, creating a rich texture and an enhanced sense of materiality.

The Ostinato dining table exudes a quietly majestic presence with its clean, minimalist lines and pedestal silhouette. It is handcrafted from the finest materials, including European walnut and a type of Nero Marquina marble that features distinct fossilized shells of marine animals. This combination of materials adds depth and character to the design, making it a true statement piece in any interior.

The construction of the table's central pillar is a testament to the designer's attention to detail and commitment to quality. Solid European walnut is meticulously milled using a specially designed device to carve the parallel lines into the material. The marble top is reinforced with a steel plate, providing strength and stability without compromising the design's aesthetic appeal.

With dimensions of 1400mm in diameter and a height of 750mm, the Ostinato dining table is a substantial piece that commands attention in any space. Its monumental presence allows it to be seamlessly integrated into a variety of interior design styles and paired with a wide range of dining chair models. Additionally, the table offers customization options, allowing for different material combinations and finishes to suit individual preferences.

The Ostinato dining table is the result of a design project that took place in Bucharest from August to September 2017. It was first exhibited in October at the Musette Kube Gallery as part of the "Materia - Off-Site Objects" exhibition. The project involved extensive research and experimentation to achieve the desired texture and aesthetic characteristics of the wooden central pillar.

Despite the creative and technical challenges faced during the design process, the Ostinato dining table emerged as a truly remarkable piece. The manual milling of straight lines into a curved surface proved to be one of the most challenging aspects of the project. However, with the use of a specially constructed machine and meticulous craftsmanship, the desired pattern was successfully implemented.

The Ostinato dining table has garnered recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2018. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.

With its unique blend of music-inspired design, exquisite craftsmanship, and attention to detail, the Ostinato dining table is a testament to the power of rhythm and repetition in transforming materials and creating extraordinary design objects.
