Mushroom: A Unique Camphorwood Shelf

A Sculptural Piece Inspired by Nature

The Mushroom shelf, designed by Shota Urasaki, draws inspiration from the vitality and freedom of mushrooms growing in unexpected places. This unique piece of furniture combines artistry, functionality, and a touch of whimsy.

The Mushroom shelf is crafted from Okinawan camphorwood, meticulously hand-carved to resemble a mushroom. What sets this design apart is the use of magnets embedded within the shelf, allowing the mushrooms to be placed freely. The mushrooms are attached to a thin steel plate that rises up from the floor, creating a visually striking display.

The large mushrooms serve as functional shelves, providing ample space for various items. On the other hand, the smaller mushrooms can be used to hold postcards or memos, adding a touch of practicality to the design. This versatility allows users to customize the arrangement of the mushrooms, creating a unique and personalized display.

The realization of the Mushroom shelf involved a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. Each mushroom is carefully carved by hand, showcasing the skill and attention to detail of the designer. The thin steel plates are bent and combined with plywood to create a sturdy base for the mushrooms.

Measuring at 910mm in width, 450mm in depth, and 1500mm in height, the Mushroom shelf is a statement piece that can easily fit into various living spaces. Its organic form and natural materials make it a perfect addition to any nature-inspired or contemporary interior.

Shota Urasaki's design process for the Mushroom shelf involved extensive research and observation of nature in Okinawa. By visiting different islands and sketching the natural surroundings, the designer was able to capture the essence of the mushrooms and translate it into a tangible form.

One of the challenges faced during the creation of the Mushroom shelf was conveying the wonder of nature in a sensory way. Urasaki had to ensure that the structure and details of the design accurately expressed the emotions and inspiration behind it.

The Mushroom shelf has garnered recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2022. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, technical skill, and contribute to improving the quality of life.

The Mushroom shelf is not just a piece of furniture; it is a work of art that brings the beauty of nature into our living spaces. With its unique form, functionality, and the ability to personalize the arrangement of the mushrooms, it is sure to captivate the hearts of design enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
