The Re Venue: A Serene and Poetic Workspace

Creating a Multicultural Oasis in the Heart of Taipei

A pool of sunlight shines through treetops and the window façade, abundant lights and shadows layering a serene and poetic landscape. The Re Venue, designed by Mu-Chin Chiang, is a 76-square-meter workspace that not only serves as a consultancy but also advocates multicultural crafts and classics. With its unique blend of Chinese aesthetics and modern design, this office provides a tranquil retreat from the bustling city.

The Re Venue stands out with its innovative approach to workspace design. Breaking down and borrowing the forms of a Chinese Ming dynasty armchair, squares and circles recompose the spatial formation, creating a harmonious balance between tradition and modernity. The result is a visually striking and functional environment that inspires creativity and productivity.

One of the standout features of The Re Venue is its use of the color black. Seen from the tiled flooring at the porch, this symbol of water in Chinese Wu Xing philosophy sets the tone for the entire space. It creates a sense of detachment from the concrete jungle outside, allowing the scenery and tranquility to slither into the indoors. The use of black also adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to the overall design.

When it came to realizing the design, Mu-Chin Chiang took a sustainable approach. The existing structure was minimally demolished, and ready-made materials were used to minimize waste. The incorporation of Chinese traditional carving crafts of yin seals and yang seals on wood panels adds a subtle visual enhancement, showcasing the designer's attention to detail and appreciation for craftsmanship.

The layout of The Re Venue is clearly subdivided into three sections: a conference room, a supervisor office, and an open workplace. The conference room features a bountiful greenery of lush plants, creating a refreshing and vibrant atmosphere. The supervisor office boldly uses a deep green-and-red palette, evoking a profound oriental connotation of "calligraphy into painting." The open workplace, reserved for the design team, provides flexibility for daily tasks and occasional interdisciplinary events.

Completed in August 2022, The Re Venue is located in Taipei city, Taiwan. It is a testament to the designer's ability to mingle cross-cultural indications in harmony. Western moulding frames hang on ink-textured oriental burgundy backdrops, showcasing the design team's appreciation for cultural assemblages.

Designing a small-scale workplace comes with its challenges, but Mu-Chin Chiang successfully achieved a balance between aesthetics and pragmatics. The compact coffee station, nestled beneath a wild grassland wallpaper and handmade ceramic tiling, ensures that no liminal space is left unused.

The Re Venue has garnered recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2023 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.

The Re Venue is a testament to the power of design to create a harmonious and inspiring workspace. With its blend of Chinese aesthetics, modern design, and sustainable practices, it stands as a beacon of creativity and innovation in the heart of Taipei.
