Florian Studer, renowned for his architectural prowess, has designed a distillery that is more than just a production facility. It's a showroom, a store, a tasting bar, and an event location, all rolled into one. The design inspiration came from the desire to create a space where the traditional distillation process could be witnessed and enjoyed in a contemporary setting. The result is a design that exudes tradition, quality, and passion.
The unique properties of this design lie in its successful amalgamation of various traditional materials such as copper, steel, wood, glass, and stone. These materials, symbolic of the distillery's craftsmanship, are set against an industrial design ambience, creating a tranquil atmosphere. The central element is a standing table, illuminated by a lamp made from distillery bottles, opposite a bar element made of crude steel with a copper surface. The interior is further enhanced by a glass elevator leading to the cellar.
The realization of this design was achieved by reflecting the industrial charm of the distillery in the architecture and furnishings. Elements finished in black expanded metal, like the lamp frame and the railing separating the distillery from the store and tasting area, contrast with warm oak wood, all staged with spot lighting. The bar's copper surface mirrors the distillery boiler, adding to the overall aesthetic appeal.
The project, which commenced in February 2021 in Schinznach-Dorf Aargau, Switzerland, and concluded in November 2021, was a result of meticulous research and planning. The design aimed to provide more space and simplicity for production, and to unite the store and enjoyment worlds. The architect took into account the diverse usability of the room, intending to bring this traditional business closer to the community.
Overcoming the challenges of planning a production facility in the hospitality industry required a deep understanding of operational processes, the needs of employees and customers, and the sustainability of materials. Florian Studer's experience and expertise contributed to a coherent overall concept that combines function and form in a remarkable way.
The design's success is evident in its recent accolade - the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2023. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and Florian Studer's distillery design is a deserving recipient. This design is a testament to the power of blending tradition with modernity, creating a space that invites guests to experience, taste, and buy wine and distillates in a charming atmosphere.
