Aedas' Szhk Science and Technology Project Bags Golden A' Design Award

The Szhk Science and Technology Project, located in Shenzhen, China, is a unique blend of form and function. The 250m main building is inspired by the Chinese parasol tree, a metaphor reflecting hospitality and shared prosperity. The retail podium, shaped like trees, creates a lively atmosphere, with its façade echoing the leaves of the parasol trees.

This development serves as a significant R&D exchange area and a gateway between Shenzhen and Hongkong. The project aims to create a central hub in the Science and Technology Innovation Zone, fostering international exchanges and regional integration. It is designed to create a 24-hour living circle that includes living, leisure, and working spaces, combined with unique activity nodes like a community health center, treehouse bookshop, game center, and art center.

The design stands out for its commitment to sustainability. It maximizes the use of natural ventilation systems to minimize air conditioning use and enhance comfort in both outdoor and indoor spaces. The perforated aluminum board used on the tower’s façade helps reduce CO2 emissions. High SRT value roofing materials reflect solar radiation, minimizing the urban heat island effect. The green podium’s roof improves roof insulation, reducing heat gain for the top floor and saving energy, particularly in cold climates.

Further, the design incorporates daylight through glazed façade and skylight to minimize artificial lighting use. Vertical fins effectively reduce solar heat gain through the façade, reducing cooling load and energy use. The rooftop solar hot water system installed for apartments generates hot water for bathrooms, reducing electricity or gas use.

The project, led by Leo Liu and Keith Griffiths of Aedas, along with a team of talented designers, is set to be built by May 2025. The award-winning design is a testament to Aedas' commitment to innovative, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing architectural solutions.
