Waterfall: A Unique and Organic Leisure Chair

An Innovative Design by Wei Jingye and Sun Bin

The Waterfall leisure chair draws inspiration from the fluidity of the Triberg Waterfall in Germany and the intricate interplay of hollow trees. Designed with ergonomics in mind, this chair offers both comfort and tranquility, making it perfect for office spaces or everyday relaxation.

The Waterfall leisure chair stands out with its graceful and organic design, mirroring the flowing nature of the famous Triberg Waterfall. The incorporation of hollow tree structures adds a unique touch, connecting form and function seamlessly. The curvature of the chair's backrest and seat surface follows the natural curve of the human waist, providing optimal comfort and support.

Utilizing modern CNC technology, the production process of the Waterfall chair begins with the design in solidworks software. The organic form is then achieved through wood milling and carving machines, with craftsmen meticulously hand-sanding the final product. European walnut is used as the raw material, adding to the chair's aesthetic appeal.

Measuring at 550mm x 480mm x 800mm, the Waterfall leisure chair showcases the fusion of modern technology and traditional craftsmanship. The chair's rounded corners and turned parts are polished by machine, while the articulation of the seat and legs draws inspiration from organic hollowing elements. The result is a visually pleasing and structurally sound piece of furniture.

When it comes to functionality, the Waterfall leisure chair excels. The backrest and seat surface conform to the body's natural curves, enhancing comfort for the user. Subtle undulations on the seat surface provide a skin-friendly feel and add a human touch to the design. The transition of the legs from large to small adds to the chair's aesthetic appeal.

The Waterfall leisure chair project began in Shenyang in March 2022 and was completed in June 2022. It was displayed at the museum of Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang. The design integrates vivid organic elements, modern industrial production techniques, and contemporary aesthetics. Walnut wood was chosen as the primary material, emphasizing the importance of quality in the seat's construction.

The Waterfall leisure chair presented several challenges during its creation. The designers had to find a balance between the organic elements of nature, industrial production techniques, and modern aesthetics. Additionally, they had to ensure functional comfort and the seamless integration of organic design elements into the chair's structure.

With its natural and organic form, the Waterfall leisure chair combines aesthetics and ergonomics. The use of high-quality walnut wood further enhances its visual appeal and durability. The integration of natural design elements with modern industrialization reflects the chair's aesthetic and practical qualities.

The Waterfall leisure chair was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2023. This prestigious accolade recognizes designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. The Waterfall chair embodies these qualities, making it a standout piece in the world of design.
