Yen-Ting Cho's innovative approach to design is evident in the 2023 Revive Collection. The eight scarf patterns, each unique and distinct, were inspired by the circumstances of the coronavirus pandemic and global conflict. The collection looks optimistically to the future, telling a metaphorical tale of curious cellular experiments, mutation, reflection, and ultimately, reconstruction.
What sets this collection apart is the unique digital software, mov.i.see, used to create the patterns. This software uses body movement to reconstruct digital data, revealing organic details that are impossible to achieve solely through programming. The result is a series of asymmetrical, non-repeat patterns that are very different from those made using traditional methods such as mirroring or repetition. The patterns, digitally printed onto natural fabric, reproduce the fine details of the designs, further enhancing their uniqueness.
The scarves are not just unique in design but also in their production process. The patterns are generated using body movement, and the colours are then adapted by the designer. This combination of digital and analogue methods produces asymmetrical and non-repeat patterns that are very different from those created using traditional methods. The choice of fabric also sets these scarves apart. While most luxury scarf pattern designers use silk, Yen-Ting Cho digitally prints onto fine wool, adding another layer of uniqueness to the collection.
The scarves, measuring 1000mm in width and 2000mm in height, are more than just fashion accessories. They are a testament to the power of digital design and innovation in the fashion industry. The unique patterns can be applied to playful, aesthetically pleasing, and desirable products. The asymmetrical patterns and colour combinations mean that the scarves can be worn in different ways, offering versatility to the wearer.
The 2023 Revive Collection started in January 2022 in London and Tainan City and finished in November 2022 in Tainan City. It was first exhibited at Shoppe Object in New York City in February 2023. The collection is a result of extensive research and experimentation, with Yen-Ting Cho using a bespoke digital software programme to create unique patterns. The challenge was to create patterns that confront the reality of disruption in the world but remain optimistic for the future. Through iteration, patterns were modified as they were created rather than allowing the software to dictate the design, revealing the authorship of the designer.
Yen-Ting Cho's 2023 Revive Collection is a testament to the power of digital design and innovation. It is a collection that looks optimistically to the future in the midst of epidemic and global conflict. The collection was awarded Silver in A' Textile, Fabric, Textures, Patterns and Cloth Design Award in 2023, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation. The designs are protected by copyright, ensuring that Yen-Ting Cho's unique approach to design is recognized and protected.
