Reviving Tradition: The Cabin Symphonic by Zarysy Jan Sekula

Award-Winning Interior Design Fuses Modernity and Highlander Architecture

Polish designer Zarysy Jan Sekula breathes new life into a traditional log cabin, transforming it into a symphony of modern design and highlander architecture. The Cabin Symphonic, a Silver A' Design Award winner, showcases a unique blend of styles, innovative construction solutions, and custom-crafted furniture.

Designing a modern space while respecting the original log cabin vibe was the main inspiration behind The Cabin Symphonic. The project, reminiscent of orchestral albums by Metallica, Scorpions, and The Who, sought to add a new acoustic depth to the traditional wood log shack. The result is a fresh perspective on highlander architecture in Poland, combining various architectural styles ranging from modernism to mid-century modern and Scandinavian design.

The project's unique properties lie in its innovative approach to dealing with the log house. Major construction alterations were required, including replacing 870cm of the living room's external wall with a sliding window. This was achieved through custom steel frames settled on extended foundations, providing solid support for the house structure while blending new elements with the original crooked log walls.

The 214 square meter house features custom furniture designed to fit the space, including built-in pieces and standalone objects. The interior doors have been designed with rounded corners and stripe details, creating a beautiful contrast against the log cabin interior. Steel elements have also been strategically incorporated to blend the original log house character with a modern approach.

The house serves as a summer vacation spot for multiple families. The challenge was to transform the traditional mountain log house into a more open, energetic, relaxing, and comfortable environment. The interior layout was carefully redesigned, creating more everyday space, and incorporating additional beds, storage, and bathrooms essential for this type of setting.

The project started in November 2020 and finished in March 2021, located in Maniowy Maly near Wroclaw, Poland. The design process involved a long search for the perfect blend of simplicity and interest, resulting in a space that is cozy and free, yet interesting enough to be worth exploring.

Despite the challenges of blending tradition with modernity and infusing a unique stylistic character into the interior, the result is a captivating and modern atmosphere that preserves the original authenticity of the space. The redesign involved significant changes to both the structure and construction, resulting in more interior openings, larger glazed areas, and an overall optimization for multi-family use.

The Cabin Symphonic was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2023. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
