Acorn Light System: Enhancing Natural Light with Innovative Design

A Sustainable Lighting Solution by Desislava Sredkova

Like many children, Desislava Sredkova spent countless hours playing with light and mirrors, and that childhood memory inspired her to create the Acorn Light System. In today's world, where energy conservation is crucial, Sredkova sought to find a natural and sustainable solution to bring additional light into our homes and workplaces without consuming more electricity.

The Acorn Light System is a groundbreaking concept that utilizes natural daylight to enhance indoor lighting. Each shade in the system is covered with mirrors on the backside, which capture sunlight during the day and reflect it deeper into the room. This innovative design increases the amount of natural light indoors, reducing the need for artificial lighting and saving energy.

At night, the mirrors in the Acorn Light System can reflect a single ceiling-mounted light source, amplifying its brightness for a more sustainable lighting solution. This dual functionality makes the Acorn Light System a versatile and eco-friendly choice for any space.

The technology behind the Acorn Light System is both simple and effective. Metal tubes are attached to a metal body that illuminates with LED-lit panels. However, what sets this lamp apart is the acrylic mirror installed on the back of the LED-lit surface. This treatment significantly enhances the lamp's performance and ensures optimal light reflection.

The Acorn Light System offers a range of products, including freestanding lamps, table lamps, wall-mounted lamps, and ceiling lamps. Each product can be customized by creating different combinations of the three basic shapes of shades: circle, oval, and leaf. Additionally, the shades can be rotated around their axis for better adjustment and to capture the sun's rays effectively. Depending on positioning, the lamps can also function as backlit mirrors, adding to their versatility.

Desislava Sredkova conducted extensive research for the Acorn Light System, focusing on people living in both older homes with limited natural light and contemporary homes with deeper spaces. The goal was to provide a solution that combines artificial and natural light in a way that promotes well-being and reduces unnecessary electricity consumption.

The Acorn Light System was developed in Sofia, Bulgaria, and the project spanned from October 2022 to January 2023. Its unique design and sustainable approach have earned it recognition in the design world. The Acorn Light System was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2023 for its well-designed, practical, and innovative features that meet professional and industrial requirements.
