The Box: A Unique Architectural Design Blending Nature and Living

Creating a Microclimate of Vivid Living Imaginations

The Box, designed by Hsiang-Peng Chang, is an architectural masterpiece that seamlessly blends into its natural surroundings while offering a unique living experience. This innovative design aims to create a sense of detachment from the bustling metropolis and establish a strong connection between the living space and the natural environment.

The Box stands out with its abstract geometric quadrilateral form, creating a visually striking architectural appearance that harmonizes with the surrounding settlement. The pure white houses, surrounded by open green spaces, create a serene and tranquil atmosphere, providing a stark contrast to the urban landscape.

One of the key features of The Box is its inset and outset arrangement of physical and virtual squares. This design element not only adds visual interest but also creates a microclimate within the interior space. The interplay of light, shadows, and spatial arrangements stimulates the imagination and enhances the overall living experience.

When it comes to the construction of The Box, special attention has been given to the choice of materials. Given its location in an earthquake-prone area, the facade of The Box is adorned with German KEIM 99% pure white mineral paint. This material not only provides durability and easy maintenance but also acts as a preventive measure against shedding tiles and stones during disasters.

The interior layout of The Box is carefully designed to promote family bonding and create memorable experiences. The dining and kitchen spaces are strategically placed in the atrium between the first and second floors, allowing the inviting smell of meals and the joy of cooking to permeate throughout the vertical space. This design encourages family members to connect and engage with each other, fostering a strong sense of togetherness.

As one moves through the different floors of The Box, staggered floor slabs and strategically placed stairways frame the outdoor scenes, turning the natural scenery into a living masterpiece on the white walls of the house. The absence of high-rise buildings in the vicinity allows for ample window openings, providing breathtaking views and a seamless connection between the interior and exterior spaces.

The bathroom space attached to the master bedroom is a testament to the innovative design approach of The Box. With the use of sky lights and carefully positioned windows, the boundaries between the bathroom and the interior space are blurred. Occupants can enjoy bathing and dressing under the natural light or moonlight, transforming the framed scenery into a work of spatial art.

The construction of The Box began in June 2021 and was completed in October 2022. The design process, which started in October 2020, involved extensive research and experimentation to maximize the use of limited space and create a diverse mix of functional areas.

The Box has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2023 in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This prestigious award acknowledges the practicality, innovation, and adherence to professional and industrial standards exhibited by The Box.

The Box is a testament to the power of architectural design in creating unique and immersive living spaces. With its blend of nature, innovative spatial arrangements, and attention to detail, The Box offers a truly exceptional living experience.
