Designed by Rui Tian, "Time of Nature" stands as a beacon of thoughtful interior design within the bustling city. The bungalow's four floors each serve a distinct purpose: a welcoming dining and reception area, a serene reading and meditation space, a casual drinking area, and a tranquil bedroom space. This layout not only caters to the various facets of daily life but also promotes a sense of family unity and balance between tradition and contemporary living.
What sets "Time of Nature" apart is its deep respect for Shanghai's architectural heritage, reflected in the bungalow's comfortable floor heights, regular layouts, and captivating courtyards. Tian's design philosophy emphasizes personalization, ensuring that each space within the home can adapt to the leisure, work, and living needs of its inhabitants, thereby creating a "second residence" that exudes comfort and warmth.
The realization of this design involved meticulous attention to detail. Curved lines soften the house's edges, and large, vintage steel windows invite an abundance of natural light. The master bedroom suite on the top floor is a testament to the design's versatility, featuring large rotating doors that modulate privacy and transparency, and a strategically placed bathtub that delineates the sleeping and bathing areas while enriching the spatial experience.
Incorporating nature into the urban environment, the design employs old wood and antique furniture to evoke a sense of historical depth. The furniture selection, with its plant vein textures and leafy hues, alongside carefully chosen carpets and decor, infuses the space with a "nature" and "exquisite" texture. This allows residents to enjoy a peaceful retreat that feels close to nature, despite being in the heart of the city.
Overcoming the challenges of modernizing a historical structure, Tian removed the original ceiling to utilize the pitched roof, enhancing the sense of spaciousness and preserving the building's old-world allure. The renovation also involved re-laying the roof with old wood, further accentuating the nostalgic atmosphere and historical significance of the property.
The "Time of Nature" project, which spanned from 2020 to its completion in August 2022, is a testament to Rui Tian's dedication to creating spaces that respect the past while embracing modern living. The Bronze A' Design Award is a fitting accolade for a design that leverages art, science, and technology to improve quality of life and contribute to a better world.
